Grocery shopping....no savings here!

Lately, I have been hearing that I need to be a wiser shopper (now you all know who would be saying that??? One guess!). I try! I try! But I am a "sucker" for anything "neat" or "inventive"...I love a great packaging. You would think that now since I can shop alone...it would get better...NO...it's getting worse?! I think.."ahhh..she would like that"..."ohhhh..he would love that in his lunch".

I could easily eliminate all of this but I don't! Why? I need a grocery shopping intervention!!!!
Who can resist carmel apples with sprinkles?????
I always say "no" to Mickey Mouse shaped cheese but when I am alone...I get it!!! Go figure!

Have you seen these new Triscuits? They are yummy with cheese!

I saw this in a magazine and thought...that is so neat! My family loves cool whip on almost anything from pancakes, hot chocolate, jello, pie...ice cream! We love it. Now it comes in a squirt can...and guess what? It is double the price than the container.! You can say it..."Sucker"!
This is where the total rises...this type of stuff....I heard those white pumpkins calling my name!Just writing this post and looking at this...makes me CRAZY! I have been reading Balancing Beauty and Bedlam--she is talking about saving a dollar all the time! The Blessed Nest has been covering budget shopping. I read their words but I forget it all once I grab that cart!

Now I would love all my readers to think I am a budget, saving, careful-with-money momma! But, I am not....Do any of you struggle with this? Words of Wisdom? How do you resist Cool Whip that is in a squirt can...tell me, please!

I love your new blog header! So cute and fun! You've been busy!!! I am a total sucker for things I don't really 'need', too! So funny~ I just got that whipped cream, too! I'm going to let Bryce put it on the jello thingies I'm making that were in a magazine I picked up at the checkout filled with Halloween things that I didn't need either!!! ;) Hugs, Les

I am chuckling because my son (just tonight)asked why I wouldn't buy any whip cream for my favorite son. I bought it when I had triple coupons, and it never even hit a bowl...literally. They squeezed it in their mouth every time they went to the fridge. Gone in 2 hours. Thanks for the shout out....you are too funny...I am laughing all the way to my penny pinching bank. :)

With sprinkles?! Yum!! Definitely tough sometimes, we have just wanted to save as much and try to pay our house off as quick as possible to get out of debt (mortgage that is :)). I'm going to be posting something about budgeting so soon actually :) You did get some super cute stuff though! :) I totally hear the oh but he/she would like it, super sweet :)

lol- Your shopping sounds like mine.. I always buy stuff I don't need and end up forgetting something that I do need...

Okay...first let me say that I am very very very cheap when it comes to buying things at the gorcery store. I recently tried buying store brand items and my wonderful husband asked me last week to please stop. lol Go figure that one out. See if had bought all the cool stuff that you had today from the grocery store, my girls, especially my oldest, would have thought I was sick or something. lol! Sorry! I can't help ya in this department. I'm with your hubby on this one.

Yeah, I'm of no help. I have the same problem:) Lately I have been better only because of the high guilt factor. When you have no income you are forced to look differently at the things you buy at the grocery store:) I find that I sacrifice certain foods so that I can spend that money elsewhere:) Once a shopper, always a shopper!

There is a time to be frugal and a time the PMS takes over. It makes me wonder with all those sprinkles and chocolate and sucking out of the can thing. We will just go with that okay. Hormones can honestly justify any behavior I think.

I have no words of wisdom....I am guilty of the same thing. I SO NEED A FILTER!

I cannot walk into a store without buying half a dozen things I don't need. That coolwhip in a can is way better than the rediwhip. It's a must have on our grocery list. I have to have coolwhip on my coffee. Starbucks spoiled me there.

i was thinking, you must have been hungry! eat before you shop!

my temptations are things that need taste testing for possible inclusion in christmas goodie packages. Ü oh, and i almost bought a greeen and white speckely pumpkin tonight.

I would be the devil on your shoulder for sure! I am always buying the latest trendy food - it's all about presentation for me! I swear I would buy dog droppings if it was wrapped cute enough! LOL!!! Sooo bad!

Too funny... I am the same way. We could shop together and smack each others hands whenever we grab for those non-essentials. I bought the canned cool whip too and was sorely disappointed. Containers... better value AND better taste. It was fun though *snicker*

That is hilarious!! My husband gives me a hard time constantly because my problem is buying shampoos. I love to try about any and every new one out on the market. You should see my collection! Quite embarrassing.
Oh, and when the bottle says "more volume"...buddy, that's the one for me! Of course, most of them end up leaving my hair flat as a flitter! :)

Have an awesome day...I'm off in a bit to buy a can of that Cool Whip!! :)

Ha Ha Ha! You are too funny! I loved reading this.

No advice here! I adbor grocery shopping like the plague.

The only way I save is to just not go. :-) but that is impossible!

You are too funny.
This girl is clipping coupons again..I have not done that in years. I am trying to spend less than I did last year. last year there was NO cool whip, so this year there will be none also.
:)
Good luck.

i am trying to do better shopping myself. i saw on RIMD once on the wednesday series someone had posted about a grocery program that keeps up with your list for you AND the prices of the things that you buy the most. I WANT IT. now i can't find it.

go figure...

As a little old retired couple, we try to shop frugally, but sometimes, a squirt can of coolwhip or candied apples or just about any nifty thing, might be too tempting to resist!

I hate grocery shopping! My hub goes, and he shops like you. He came home with three different (!) kinds of Lucky Charms...chocolate, extra marshmellows, and regular...

Mickey Mouse shaped cheese?! I've never heard of such a thing!

Stacey @ The Blessed Nest said...

Hehehe!! :) Too funny! I've never even heard of Mickey Mouse cheese! Ok, the carmel apples I'll give ya--those are awesome!

Yes, I think EVERYONE struggles with impulse buys and stuff like this! I know I do too--I think half the time I write posts toward myself! :)

Definitely eat before you go! And since I hate to grocery shop, I practically make a mad dash for what I need and get outta there! That;s probably why I've never heard of this stuff before!

Budgeting doesn't mean there's no fun stuff...it just has to fit into your families budget.

very funny... my only tips are eat until you are miserably full before you shop and avoid the aisles that have non-essentials on them and allow yourself one or two splurges then spend the whole time trying to figure out what they will be.

Sorry, I can't help you---because I'm right there with you! Now I can't wait to go get me some cool whip in a can (how cool is that)??

It's okay, I am always talking about being frugal on my blog. I even call myself "froogie". I am great at getting free stuff at drug stores and I can get clothes and furniture so cheap, but groceries are my weakness. No tips here, just a little sympathy. Let me know how the cool whip in a can works out.

I am SO with you on this. I am a total sucker for cool looking stuff even if the price is crazy (within reason!). Nice to know I'm not the only one!!!

I am the same way...we have a store in this area "Wegma@n's"...not sure if you have them where you live....it is a grocery store but so much more....the carry tons of housewares and all the coolest seasonal things.....I am a total sucker for this stuff....It calls my name...all of it!! I am so bad, that my husband has offered to do the grocery shopping as of late......he is kicking off my intervention by banning me from my favorite store!

Darlene said...

Oh girl,

I am SO NOT a thrifty shopper...I am right there with you on buying that kind of stuff! Gosh, and though I subscribe to all kinds of magazines they put them right there at the check out line so I almost always have to pick one up...though I am so behind on all my others......good grief!! It really is a no win situation for me at the grocery store!

Love your blog, I've tried to comment before but for some reason my computer would never let me. I can't relate with you one being a sucker for nice packaging but I do love me some Cool Whip. I better stay away from the cans though, we'd blow through them too fast!

Love the new blog design! And, boy do I relate to this post. I LOVE the grocery, target, Costco. Impulse buying is my weakness in the grocery.

HAHAHA you are so funny!!!

I have trouble w/ some things but others it is very easy for me to say no to. I am a frugal person but it is still difficult now and again!

I am a sucker too, so I can't help you! Every week I walk out the door for the grocery store and tell myself "Next week I will use coupons.." but then I get busy and I don't take the time to sit down and go through them. I wish I had more determination in this area!

FUN stuff! I have never seen the mickey mouse shaped cheese. Oh, the things they come up with! If I was a mommy I would totally buy them for my kids. My package came in the mail yesterday, but I am out travelling for work. (The husby is at home--checking the mail.) I can't wait to get home tonight and open it!!

New Tricuits!!! Caramel apples with sprinkles!!! You are making me want to go grocery shopping right this minute!

Christy said...

I have the same problem. I've been working on a post about my grocery shopping and one thing I need to do is not to buy the things that aren't on my list.

Cute, pretty packaging gets me every time. you know what my latest thing is... all the different flavored creamers! I think I have about 6 of them in my frig right now.

Maybe you could get a cute little cookie cutter to make fun shapes out of a block of cheese. Just an idea:)

jennykate77 said...

We have similar grocery shopping lists...fun-shaped cheese, cool whip in a can, white pumpkins...seriously, no one can resist those! I have tried the This Crisp Triscuits! YUMMO! I ate mine with some sun-dried tomato humus. Really good. Love your blog. Thanks for stopping by mine :)

Oh my gosh, its scary how much a like we are. I do the same thing.

I cannot tell a lie...I buy the baby carrots in a bag, I buy the pre-cut up fruit salad in the plastic container, I buy everything pre-packaged and double the price. I am the poster child for over spending in a grocery store!

Laurin Pearce said...

Hahaha, I laughed my booty off reading this blog post! It was so cute and honest and true!! I love grocery shopping! I always buy things that I can't "live" without!

I'm pretty much a store brand kind of girl, but there are definitely things I can't resist. I will ALWAYS buy JIF peanut butter no matter what.
Now that you've introduce me to the Cool Whip though...my mind might be changing....

Tami said...

Oh, the cool whip sounds, uh, COOL!Gotta try that!

Heather said...

Okay, 51 comments on this post! That is hilarious!

And you are making me so hungry!

I try to be a savvy shopper, but I usually succumb to yummy foods like these.

If I see Cool Whip in a squirty can, you know I'm buyin' it. Just sayin'.

I have never see that Micky Mouse Cheese. Maybe becasue I always just reach for my old faithful string cheese.

I've been wanting to try that Cool Whip ever since I saw it on the Biggest Loser. I always froget about it when I am at the store.

Too funny! I fall victim to this, too. I go in with a list and still come out with things I don't really need. That dip looks delicious!
