"Pickle Me Green"

If you have stopped by here this month, you know I love traditions. A couple of years ago, I was at an ornament exchange party and one of the ornaments was a "pickle". It's an old tradition where you have a pickle on the tree. At Christmas Eve, you move it on the tree to a different "spot" . Whoever finds it Christmas morning receives a "special" gift. I just loved this!!!! However, I wasn't able to "steal" that pickle ornament.

On Saturday, I was in Crate and Barrel and there I saw it. The PICKLE Ornament!! When I laid my eyes on it....I could almost hear the angels singing or maybe it was my squeal of delight. So this Christmas, we will have a new tradition with our "pickle"..I can't wait!!!

Does anyone else do the Pickle "tradition"???

Oh by the way, if I am going to any ornament exchange this year..guess what they are getting???hee hee

I am so glad you told this story. I've seen pickle ornaments in stores and always thought "why the heck would anyone want a pickle on their tree!" I had no idea it was a tradition. Very cool

I have never heard of the pickle tradition. Sounds like a lot of fun and a challenge... finding that green pickle on a green tree.

*resisting temptation to crack a joke using the phrase 'in a pickle'*

I have not done this, but I have heard of it. There is a similar one with a pig, I think, too. Sounds fun!

Never heard of this one, although I have seen pickles before, I just thought it was strange. Although, I now have a peanut on my tree now since I went to Plains, GA...We play a money game every year at our family party. The grands look forward to that almost as much as the gifts. Well, the kids too. :)

I have seen the pickle, but we don't have one. We have relish and it is very messy.

Thanks for sharing! Happy Holidays :-)

my former mother in law had this tradition with her siblings - just did it at the extended family Christmas party.

I started it with the kids a couple years ago. The Man really has fun with it!

Good Morning... We have had a pickle on our tree since my grown daughters were little.... we always did the German tradition of hiding the pickle... and the first to find did indeed get an extra little gift... It is fun for the kids and now they have a pickle on their trees... Have a great day!

I have never heard of that tradition, but it sounds fun-My husband, and all my boys LOVE pickles-I mean, drinking the juice in the jar, and everything!!! So that would be the best ornament here!!!! Love it!
(Glad you liked the card/picture! I wanted something I could hang up longer than just a month-so I matched the boys to my home-with my suitcases!!!LOL)

I have seen the pickle ornaments in the stores but I never knew what the meaning was, this sounds like so much fun.

I recently discovered your blog and have been reading some of the older posts. I saw that you went to the Lake Cumberland scrapbook retreat, I have been to that retreat in the past it was so much fun. We visit the lake almost every weekend in the summer and miss it so much in the winter.

Absolutely! Pickles on the tree are just the best and so fun! My sister is a pickle freak (to eat) and she has several on her tree! :)

That sounds like such a fun idea! I'd love to try that but I'm afraid that whoever didn't find it would be sulking or crying and then it would not be a good start to Christmas morning!

I have never heard of this – I will however, be looking for the pickle ornament now because I love this!

Yep! We do the pickle tradition here too. My mom always used to have it on her tree and I was always the lucky one to find it each year. Now that I've inherited her ornaments, I'm going to continue the tradition here.

I'm glad you reminded me that I need to hide the pickle (why does that sound dirty?) and buy a pickle present!

Joanna said...

Awesome! I have never done the pickle before and had heard of it but not to the extent of what you do...Great idea and thank you for sharing so that now we can do it as well!

Yes, we have a pickle ornament, but we've never really done the tradition that goes along with it. Maybe we should do that next year....

I'm glad to finally know why I've seen pickle ornaments on people's trees! I was too polite to ask why they would hang such a thing on their tree, but it sounds like fun.

Heather said...

Yes - we do the pickle tradition in our home - in fact the kids are already searching the tree!

Yep, we're pickle people at this house too. My MIL is German decent and she has always done it, so we started it the year we were married. My kids love it.

You know, I've seen pickle ornaments before and just thought that somebody must REALLY love pickles! I had no idea there was a tradition behind it! How cool. I'm so loving you for giving me all these great ideas and traditions to do with my family. I think I'm going to do your "golden ticket" idea this weekend! I'm so excited!

Hope you have a great Tuesday!

Yep~ we've been doing this for years and love it! I have them on each tree and it's just so fun. Instead of an extra pressie we always do something else for the person (it's always Bryce but in a few years Caroline might give him a run for his money!) who finds it 1st. It has been choosing the snack that day, picking out a movie to watch, etc...
So glad you guys love the pickels, too! FUN!
Merry December~ Les

Sandy,
It's so funny that you posted this today....I just won a pickle ornament from an ornament exchange.....I can't wait to show the kids.

Tami said...

We do the pickle tradition too!!!! My kids love it:-). I don't even wait until Christmas eve. I hide the pickle when the tree goes up and my boys look for it. Who ever finds it gets a piece of candy. Then I hide it again, and again and again. Lots of fun!

This is too funny, BECAUSE I received one of these for a gift last year and had NO IDEA what the point of the pickle was. The person did not tell me there was a tradition behind it. I'm so glad to know!!!
What fun. Now the one hanging on our tree can serve a tradition purpose. Rather than just being a pickle on a tree.

I have heard of that tradition before, but have never done it. I made the toile star by hot gluing fabric to a wooden star from Michaels. Super cheap and easy!

Hi Sandy, I found you by way of Chris at Chris's Corner, and I'm so glad that I did! I had seen pickle ornaments before, but didn't know the tradition. You can imagine my wondering WHY anyone would have a pickle in their tree? But after I moved to NY, my friend Dorothy explained it to me, and now I search through all of her 7 trees trying to find it! Love your blog -

JUST today a friend was telling me about this tradition!! How fun!

We have done this for years and my children still look forward to it. Enjoy your new tradition.

I've never heard about this tradion and yesterday as I was watching a snippet of my soap opera (Days of our lives) in a scene the dude was explaining to the girl what it meant...just funny how I've never heard of this than read it here and see it explained on t.v. to hehehe :)

I found the pickle when my boys were young teens. They loved it. I always taped money to it and the first kid up in the morning who found the pickle got to keep the cash.

I really only did that because I couldn't STAND waiting for them to get up on christmas morning! I'm the get up in the middle of the night cause SANTA came, kinda girl hehehe.

I still do the same thing now that I live alone.. up at 3 am to see what I bought myself :)

You have some of the greatest ideas! (many of which I have tried to work into my families traditions). This one included. When I read this post, I got giddy with excitement and made plans to run to the store and find myself a pickle ornament. The pickle gods must have felt my excitement, because when I got home from work last night, there was one sitting on my front porch, left by a neighbor . What a lucky girl I am!
