Don't Mess With My "Sleeve"

Now...before you write your comment or send me an email...read carefully...

I don't like "waste"

but on the other hand

I am not a tree hugger either BUT yet I see benefits in the whole "Go Green" movement within certain limitations and do my share.

HOWEVER,

My speculations a couple of weeks ago were CONFIRMED....

I was at Starbucks..getting my carmel light latte....

The lady hands me my drink and I ask her for a "sleeve" to go around the cup..it was HOT...I could not hold it...

She pointed to the chalkboard above with colored chalk that read...

"Go Green With Starbucks and don't use a sleeve"

She asks "Do you want to participate?" I quickly replied "No, I would rather use some cardboard than blister my hand. Didn't Starbucks invent the "sleeve"? "

She replies..."People are making cloth sleeves and carrying them in their purse."

Making Cloth Sleeves....Some days I can barely FIND my purse let alone a {cloth sleeve} for my coffee~

COME ON!!! Conservation is good but DON'T mess with my "sleeve"..oK???

I don't like Starbucks...but I totally agree with you on having a sleeve with a HOT drink! Hello!?!??! I did laugh a bit while reading this though. I do hope that you got your sleeve. lol!

Oh My! I love my Starbucks! And I did not know about the 'sleeveless' movement going on! I try to save mine (I usually have a few in the bottom of my purse and a couple in my glove compartment) and reuse if at all possible.. On the plus side, it's getting warmer and soon it'll be time for ICED coffees!

Hello! I saw your sweet comments on Lions, Tigers, and Boys, Oh My! blog and had to come check you out! I'm glad I did because I got a good chuckle out of this post!

You are so funny! CLOTH SLEEVES! That just sort of sounds silly to me. I mean, if they really want peeps to conserve they should give them a 10 cent discount if you bring back your old sleeve to use... I think they do that with their mugs.

This was too funny! I didn't know Starbucks was doing this. I was wondering why I didn't get my sleeve the last time I went through the drive thru.

LOL! This made my day...and my fiance's too!

That is crazy! Can't they just give you a cardboard sleeve to prevent you from sustaining 3rd degree burns on your hand? I mean, come on now! That's taking things a bit too far! Now, get crackin' on sewing up some nifty little fabric sleeves for your latte! Whatcha waitin' for? LOL!

Even better? Bring your own reusable cup...I know you have those in your fab kitchen!!! :)

trish said...

Holy Moly! That is nuts! Conservation is key, in a balance of sorts but instead of getting rid of the cardboard sleeve (which is biodegradable) do away with the plastic garbage bags in the can their cups end up in! Sheesh! :o)

I'm totally 100% with you on this one. I'm all for conservation of resources. I try to do what I can (and what makes sense). BUT I hate it when I've got a hot cup of something...Ummm...No....I don't want to end up in the ER with burns thank you very much! LOL! I love the idea of a cloth sleeve but I'd be losing them or accidentally throwing them away...How wasteful would that be????????

the undomesticated wife said...

I've actually seen the cloth sleeves (or "coffee cozies") on etsy and they are really a good idea! And cute! Don't hate me. But this girl is a tree hugger. ;) :b

But yeah, it's not practical to not have some sort of sleeve. Even with the cardboard sleeves, those cups can still burn your fingers! I know, it's happened to me! So I can't imagine not having SOMETHING.

Great post, Sandy Toes!

Now that's taking it too far! I'm sure lots of folks will still want their sleeves. I don't go to Starbucks much, but that's one of their trademarks.

Oh my -- I think a sleeve is way better than a burn!

Happy Earth Day!

I agree. I prefer to keep all ten digits blister-free.

This is hilarious! Had no idea they were doing this either.... I always ask for mine extra hot too cause I can't stand luke warm coffee... either hot or iced is for me but not the middle of the road. I bought myself a fancy espresso machine from Starbucks ... that was my go green trick! I'm saving gas by making my own.
here's to our coffee,

THat is crazy and there are limits on this crazy green movement. I agree we should care more and not waste what God has given us. I'm sure there was a push on this from Starbucks too, to save money out of there pocket. Since they have to pay for those maybe they should lower thier coffee prices if they aren't going to give you a sleeve. What a great idea who ever does their markeing great money saver for them and it fits most of their target customer.

This made me laugh. I'm somewhere in the middle as you are. Sort of light-green. And yeah, who remembers to bring in their own cuff? I have so many fabric grocery bags that I'm tripping over them at home, but do you think I can remember to bring them back to the store when I shop. Uh, no. Maybe I should make a cuff/keychain. Seems some days all I can find are my keys and my Starbucks card. And I, too, refuse to blister over a cup-o-joe. Great post, now, off to Starbucks.

I am totally cracking up at your post today! You gotta have something around those blistering hot cups!!

How funny! You should have suggested they could really make some money if they decided to sell the cloth sleeves themselves!

that's great!!

As you know I do not care for the company BUT I like certain drinks. but I am not going sleeveless, but come to think about it the sleeves were harder to reach hummmm sunriseside

THAT is funny. I bought some of those cloth sleeves for friends for Christmas last year, but me-myself, yep I use cardboard sleeve thankyouverymuch! Let the others "go green" on that issue. LOL ;-) I'm totally withyou .... I don't think I could keep track of a cloth sleeve!

Liz Harrell said...

Oh yeah. I draw the line at some things.. blisters on the hand being one of them. Maybe they should just do away with the sleeves and make better CUPS. :)

Heather said...

What a contradiction when they made them so you wouldn't get burned! They would be liable if you burned yourself by holding a hot cup! Crazy!

Candice said...

This is too funny, I love it. I know what you mean, isnt there sleeve made of recycled materials anyway.

Robin Beck said...

Oh my goodness and I thought atuff like this only happened here in Seattle! C'mon...
It is funny to me how everyone is so "green" nowadays, I do have a problem with "most of it"-though some is good! Most of it's just the blind leading the blind. I saw two bumper sticker on the road last week when I was driving to Medford Oregon, one read, "trees are the answer" I always thought God was.
The other read, "Tree Hugger" yet he had a mattress on top of his car that had wood in it, I'm sure he lives in a house made of wood and wipes his you know what with toilet paper (wood) ~ Here in Washington the loggers have done an amazing job of cutting down trees and then REPLANTING them. God put them and animals here for us not visa versa. America has got to stop worshipping the creation and start worsipping the creator...
I'm off my soap box for now. :)
Have a great week!
Robin~♥

That is so funny. I actually saw an example of a little sweater sleeve on another blog earlier this week...great in theory but pretty impractical if you ask me.

I can't believe you wrote about this-one of my friends just bought my sister one, and at first both of us don't understand what it was-a cuff to wear? A funky bracelet??
They are cute, and I had never seen them before...
I would forget to keep it in my purse!!!
Our starbuck is pushing the same thing-and I just laughed at her-

Huh now I know why I have to keep asking for those things at the drive through. Well I am on to iced lattes for the summer. I guess I will have to deal later with this new eco friendly dilemma...=]

I think I am a little clueless on what this generation calls eco friendly. My son is always freaking out about something I am not doing green. Yet he and his generation go through so much electronic gadgets...new cell phone, computer, ipod, camera…this or that every time I turn around. I have this old fashion theory. Just take care of what you do have and use it. I can’t get over the just “throw it away” generation because it is two seconds old. I could re use a paper sleeve. Matter of fact I have no problem reusing a travel mug. But have you noticed how those have gone out of style???

I think it's awesome if people do remember to bring their sleeve with them, but I know myself and I would ALWAYS forget. I'm just glad to remember all my kids before I run out the door! :)

It's a good thing that I'm not a coffee drinker I guess.

How about when you shop at Ikea and they don't wrap anything for you...unless you pay for the bags or the paper you need??? They say the paper/bags $ is donated to the forest. If Ikea likes and believe in that cause so much, they should donate from THEIR annual profits to the Forest. In the meantime, wrap my 238 $2.00 items (NEVER buy furniture there) and let ME decide where and to whom I want to donate my $...Paper, Bags and Sleeves are part of Customer Service!!! Oh my, I think I have some unresolved issues...LOL!!!!
Happy Green Day!!!

very funny. maybe mcdonald's could start putting our fries right in our hand instead of in a paper pouch.

This one made me chuckle. We call Brett "Tree Hugger." We moved to TX when Brett was in 4th grade. We needed to cut some cedar in our new backyard and he had a fit. He said the trees were here first. Then I saw my first scorpion and wanted to squash it, but he had a fit then too. See, "Tree Hugger."

I agree with you! I am not particularly fond on burning my hand either! I think that most of us try not to waste and to be good stewards of what the Lord has given us, but not everyone is called to handmake their own sleeves...me included! :) I hope you have a wonderful day!

im in a mood today ..
here is my plan ...
go green
get burned
run to the er
sue and get a million dollars ..
this is what i think,
for the love of 'b-geebers'..
then share the cash with m e ... c'mon and be a toughy!!

secondly,
the library is not giving bags any more ...
can i have my tax dollars back now??>?
why cant the little old lady with the walker have a bag??
c'mon .. think of the domographics ..

its all to much for me .. that free enterprise is determining what is good for me ..
this is not a green movement ..
it is ..
we are charging you the same price for less movement under the 'blanket' of being green .. all while we use our toxic chemicals in the back to clean with and our mass shipment of goods from china

Believe it or not, I've never even been to a Starbucks. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but when I do want some, I just make it at home.

After hearing your experience, it sounds like I should just keep on making mine at home. :-)

This same exact thing happened to me today, and I looked at the poor lady behind the counter like she was an idiot. A cloth sleeve. Really? I already have to take my own bags to the grocery store!

They will cut that practice out as soon as they get their first law suit from someone burning their hands. Besides if they stop using the sleeves what are all the recycled paper manufacturers going to do with their products...
Not a good idea to be too green...although I have seen the upcycled sleeves on Etsy and they are cute...but try to remember them that is a whole other story.

Hilarious. I laugh at all the little green things today. I was so proud that my daughter wore pink today.

Sleeve the Sleeve alone. Who rah.

You TOTALLY crack me up! I'm trying to give up paper towels right now and I am driving my husband crazy. lol But a coffee sleeve? You HAVE to have those! It's a safety issue for crying out loud! I'm with you!

Stacey said...

I have to agre with you on that one. More likely, it's a way for Starbucks to keep a few pennies in their own pockets.

Unknown said...

Reusing them is a great idea. I hope they don't do away with them, though. Sleeves rock!

Jennifer said...

This is so funny! My friend has had the SAME issue here. She has been really aggrevated! Sooo I went out and bought her a monogrammed one that is reusable :)

Oh my word! This is getting rediculous! I, too, am all for being wise stewards of God's resources, but not at the expense of having to carry around a homemade cloth coffee cup sleeve! :-)
