Well, when we got home...a "first" time struggle really reared it's ugly head. My daughter was completely taken by this show. She wanted to watch it every chance she could...she even tried to "tivo" it. None of my kids are big tv watchers...they love to be outside and are all very active...so t.v. has not been an issue here!
But, now it was....this show is watched by kids from kindergarten up. But, there was something in this show that really pulled on my daughter. I finally had to talk with her and tell her we were not going to watch it anymore.
Ahh...how hard it is when you let your guard down and then have to go back and sweep up the pieces. It has really been a struggle here...
So I pulled out some of my "Little House on the Prairies"....which my daughter at first had no interest in. So I had to sit with here and watch it with her... she now loves it!
Two weeks ago...I heard my daughter playing with her friend and they were going to be rock stars!
This week, my girls were deciding who was going to be Laura and who was going to be "Mary"....
Of course, I wasn't too thrilled when they asked me to be Mrs. Olsen at the general store~

That's funny. My daughter has a thing for a couple of Disney shows as well & we are always using them as conversation starters on what not to do.
Hope you're having a good week.
Boy, they don't make shows like that anymore. I miss them so much. I'm so tired of these smartaleck disrespectful tweenie shows I could puke. (sorry) just got me going.
I've tried to get my girls to read the LHOTP books, but they just don't seem interested. It's sad.
I talked to our elementary school librarian about the books (my childhood favorite) and she said they rarely get checked out and the kids just don't want to read them.
Good for your kids for not watching much tv. That is the way to go. The Mrs. Olson thing is funny.

Hooray for you, mom!! Brings to mind this: "well done, thou good and faithful servant..." (I don't know the NIV translation for that!).
You are such a good mother. While I don't have children yet, I can imagine how it becomes harder and harder to separate them from the "things of the world" that will pull on them and just take them in a direction you'd rather not go - even if it might be a certain attitude and not necessarily drugs or something really out there. Not that tv is of the world, but there are just some shows that aren't good for kids because of the influence it can have on them and the influence is where the problem lies (as you know). So, good for you that you stepped in and put the stop on it while knowing what is in your child's best interest. Go, Mama, go!
You put it so well ... "sweeping up the pieces when my guard is let down." There is a show that comes on that I had not watched and the first few times, we all laughed like crazy. Just silly humor and quick come backs. But then Woody told me ... here is a single mom living next door to her divorced husband (who cheated on her) with his new wife (who broadcasts the whole adultery matter) and is raising a couple children of her own, not to mention her other daughter and husband live with them, who were pregnant and married in high school. That is expected to be considered the American Way (to a degree). Believe me ... I would never judge people for that ... I too experienced a teen pregnancy. But I do not want to accept that as the accepted. So we turned it off. Our daughter is 16 and our son 14, I just don't want to send mixed signals. It just seems our guards always have to be up and it can be exhausting at times.
Oh boy, I seemed to have written a book here. :o) We do let our (older) children watch shows that may not be ok in other's eyes, so I pray this does not come off as "snooty tooty" of me for typing.
We still love Little House on the Prairie and they even played a newer version on Hallmark recently that we recorded. :o)
Have a wonderful day!
Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne
Oh my!
TV is such a tricky thing. I know I let my girls watch too much of it (not TV but movies). Right now we're watching Rocky & Bullwinkle. Funny stuff!
What a cute story! I've always loved "Little House on the Prairie"! There's always such a good moral to every story and it never fails to leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Mrs. Olsen, huh? Not sure what to think about that one! LOL!
We've had to limit the amount of viewing of that particular Disney show too. Jenna, my 6 year old, would get just a little too much sass after watching.
How true this is... SO many of the shows that are supost to be for children are really not acceptable shows... Glad you stuck to your beliefs... We watch Little House & Anne of Green Gables with our grand daughter... Funny about Mrs, Olsen!!!

awwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!
Nice! I still watch LHOTP any chance I can get! Mrs. Olsen that is hysterical! Atleast one of them wasn't wanting to be Nelle right... Funny thing... just as I came to your blog this fine morn. I was on the phone with our satelite service trying to get it canceled... For many reasons and the quality of kid's shows is definately near the top of our list.
I know what you mean-they act like what we let them watch.
Over the years, this has been a struggle also with my boys-
Right now they have been watching the DVD set, Planet Earth, and the Blue Planet (the ocean version).
We all are in love with this-and learning so much.
Much better than the shows on Disney-I dont need to discuss dating, kissing, ect just yet-we'll be sticking with animal things...And I took your advice-I let the boys buy their hermit crabs-with their own money.
They LOVE them sooooo much!
We've been home for a few days, and the crabs even spent the night at Nana's with them-my mom screamed out loud when she saw them! (Priceless!)
I love that show. It is one of those shows that sounds corny and then you watch it and really like it. I still think of Michael Landon being on that show Highway To Heaven, do you remember that show. That is another good one , your kids might like.
I don't know who was worse...mrs.olsen or nellie! LOL! I loved that show when I was younger.
I am having a giveaway on my blog today to celebrate 500 posts!
Tv struggles and be tough. Isn't it nice that Little House is still around to watch -- LOVE that show. Mrs. Olsen -- no way could you be Mrs. Olsen!! :)
Janet
Mrs. Olson!! hee hee how I can relate to this post... something happened in the last 2 weeks at our home too, one tv show has become an obsession that use to be watch rarely!!! and now it's like it brainwashing them... they are glued to the couch acting like couch potatoes and have even told me to wait to toss them in the pool!! Oh no... I must loose the remote tonight and tell them I can't find it!! is that bad!!
Sweet dreams Mrs. Olson,
LuLu
Oh, good call! And great redirection. Thank you for being a participating parent. ~Mindy
I used to watch 'Little House ...' when I was a teenager. Loved it! I hate all that violence/swearing-packed "kid" shows on TV. I let my son watch some cartoons, like Mickey or Winnie and try to be selective with DVDs. Sorry for the Mrs Olson incident!
Oh, I love Little House! I used to watch it every day when I was a kid! You can't go wrong with that show! :) But I wouldn't want to be Mrs. Olsen either! :)
Did I ever love Little House growing up! It was my favorite show.
oh that Mrs. Olson!
i loved playing little house on the prairie! glad you have re-directed her... for now!
I've had to explain to my dad when he's watching the kids that just because it's on a "kid" channel it may not be safe for my kids to watch. That makes me sad.
My oldest son and I read the first Little House book together this year and I wanted him to see the shows. I looked into getting them from ebay and then I never followed through. This was a good reminder.
LOL!!
Great post. My crew loves TV, mayeb because we got rid of ours 8 years ago. Now they are OBSESSED.
LOL!! Yes, we have those struggles too. I hate sass, so I can always tell when my kids have been watching strange stuff! It's been a while since I've been here, so Hi again.
