My Home....What is Your Style? Part 2

Yesterday, I talked about what is your style?...how do you mix your "old" with your changing taste in decor? So most of my house is traditional and primitive here and there. I could be breaking all the rules but I have found that french country can go nicely with primitive.

I have a dear friend and old neighbor who has a wonderful house. Her decorating is amazing and "fit" for any magazine. I always "ooohhh" and "aww" everytime I am there. Well, this past fall she came for a visit. We stripped the bathroom wallpaper..ugh what a job! We painted...we accessorized and I love it. It's so opposite from the rest of my home. However, it's a bathroom off the main part of the home.

Off the kitchen is a hallway...you can either enter the family room of the mother-in-law suite..head to the laundry room or the bathroom. So with the bathroom being "alone"..I felt like I could do almost anything.

Do you have a room like that? It's not like any other room but yet in an odd way it works.

So here it is..the paint is by Ralph Lauren and has almost a glare/shine look...painted....changed the hardware (EASY decor improvement), added some "fun" towels, a few "le fleurs" and it's a whole new bathroom.

Now, this may ruffle some "feathers" but I am a firm believer that your home can be pretty even with young kids. It make take some "pep" talks..like "Use this towel but not these towels"....or use this "soap" .

Have I walked into the bathroom but to find a HUGE mess? Yes, my son has been known to run in and wipe his soccer ball off with my bathroom towels.

But, I am determined not to let my sweet little crumb crunchers prevent me from "pretty"...it may be extra work but it's worth it.

I am really not sure what this "style" is. This bathroom looks nothing like the rest of my home but it's fun and different. It works and a simple can of paint..new hardware...a few towels makes it fun. I do have some wonderful black and white pictures in the bathroom in some great matching frames ...I love pictures in bathrooms. Adds a personal touch.

Tomorrow we are heading to the laundry room. It's red with black accents...it's nothing like the rest of my house but it makes me happy as I fold all those socks and towels.

Can you think of a room in your house where just a can paint and few accessories could make all the difference?

I have a bathroom I'd love to spruce up. I rent so don't want to spend a lot of money. The wallpaper is beginning to peel a little and is country blue and country mauve. Remember that style back in the 80s? Well the laminate counter top is a mauvy pink color. Medium wood cabinets... Any ideas for wall color? I know a can of paint could do wonders. It is the main bathroom and it is stuck in the 80s. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention our style.... We are newly married so have a lot of mismatch style with "his, mine and the landlords."

I love what you did with your bathroom! It looks wonderful! And I am with you on still wanting things to be pretty even though kids are in the house! :) I'm like this, too!

I hope your week is off to a great start! :)

I would love to do that to my whole house!! Haha! Really, right now, if we would paint our bathroom, change some hardware, change out the towel racks, shelf, and tp roll holder, change the lightening...well, there's a lot really. But I think some small changes would really spruce it up.

Ok, the part about your son wiping off his soccer ball with your pretty towels made me laugh...sorry! So typical for a little boy...even my girls would do something like that!

I really love what you've done in your bathroom...very nice! Love all your wall hangings and your rug. I would definitely like to spruce up my laundry room, but with us moving in another year or so, I can't seem to find the motivation.

Hi Sandy Toes! I'd say this looks classy! Love the crown plaques! I'm laughing because my older daughter still has a tendency to wipe of her hands on my nice decorative dish towels before washing!lol I've had chocolate and spag sauce appear and I know I didn't do it!lol Yes we still can have pretty even if it involves more work and a little yelling!!lol Must go read first style post below! Have a great week - Sincerely, Jeannette

Just beautiful. I love it. I also think that even if you have kids, you can have nice things. They need to learn early on that not everything in the house is FOR them. :)

Your bathroom is great! I have always been a big believer in not sacraficing pretty things because of the kids. They will adapt to whatever is the norm for them and I feel like now that my two girls are older they have a new appreciation for "pretty" things! (my son is another story...still working on him) I am getting ready to paint my dining room, I want it to be lighter and brighter and I think that will make a huge difference.

Paint and accessories make a HUGE difference-I am pretty satisfied with our house-it is the cottage that always needs sprucing up! We think about what we want to do all winter-but-
By the time we get up there, we are just happy to be in warm weather, and forget about updating...

Style? What's that? I don't think I have a style...but I need one. or need someone to style my house for me. lol!

I can't wait to catch up on your blog when my little crumb snatchers go to take a nap. In the mean time, I wanted to let you know I have something for you on my blog.

And, I agree - you can have PRETTY and little citizens in your house. :D

My laundry room..It is off the kitchen and bound to be seen but a new paint color and some accessories would make this room wonderful!

Oh and I totally agree with kids you can have a great home! I "trained" my girls to not use this and that and not to touch certain things, they never look back and fun is still had!

I'm still waiting on the master bath. It's halfway gutted, so it will take a little more than paint to spruce it up. LOL

Paint and accesories would make a huge difference in most of my rooms! We moved here a year ago and I haven't finished decorating. Mostly, I just don't want to spend the money on it, so I do it a little at a time. Part of me just wants to finish though. Your bathroom is very nice!

I also love pictures in the bathroom, and our bedroom is the only one that I have not painted yet, so yes there is one room in my house that a can of paint would change for the better!!

Love,Kristy
p.s. your home is beautiful

i have just painted my master bedroom, and put in a couple of lamps. its a little bare, but even without anything on the walls (or a headboard) it has its own personality. :)

Hi, I wanted to drop by and visit your blog. I see your Sandy Toes on lots of blogs I visit so we must run in the same blog circles. I love how you decorated this bathroom.
I think the hardest part of mixing old and new is the colors. I'm sorry buy my old mauve and blue stuff just doesn't match my stuff anymore. :) I have a quilt I never finished because of that reason.
I'm with you on kiddos and decorating. They can learn to respect your stuff. That's an important part of growing up.

You have totally inspired me.....your bathroom looks so pretty....and that is exactly the room in my house that can use some sprucing. When we moved in, I was so worried about all the other rooms, one of my bathrooms got neglected:( Can't wait to see your laundry room!

Love the Ralph Lauren paint. I used his "leather" paint in my study. I am like you, telling the kids not to use certain towels. I THINK they have the idea now. Brett however can leave quite a mess, so every morning I go behind him and wipe down the bathroom. I also like pictures in the bathroom. Yours turned out great!

I could not agree with you more!!! I firmly believe that everyone can have a pretty house--regardless of having kids or not. I think it can be an easy excuse to use, so we have to be careful not to let it run our decorating. I think the bathroom looks beautiful. I LOVE the wire basket!

Love the way you decorated your bathroom! One of my front bathrooms could use some accessories to spruce it up a bit. Maybe I'll get around to it this year. We'll see!

I totally agree that kids can and need to be trained. I love that I can trust my kids and they try to do their best in taking care of our things. Pretty bathroom too.

Hi Sandy Toes. :) I'm enjoying your series. I think it's fine to have one or two rooms that are different. My house has a basic color scheme or red, yellow, green but...my boys rooms are off of a separate hallway. Their end is shades of blue and I think it will stay that way. I love blue and white too so as they leave home I will spiff it up in those colors. Speaking of a room that needs some paint and work - you should see their bathroom. Ugh!! That is a room you will never see on my blog.
