Who cut what hair??

My family sat down for dinner and my husband starts asking my kids how their day was. As the kids go around the table, my youngest in midst of everything else she says mentions that her sister cut her doll's hair. It really did not connect until a few minutes later...I ask "Who cut what hair?".

I come to find out my girls cut their American girl doll hair to make it look like Kit {who has short hair}. Of course, my son seems to find this a bit amusing and runs up to find the evidence. It was not hard to find...

I was mad.....then became more mad....then I just wanted to cry that I held two American girl dolls that looked like they had been "butched". I think I felt every {scope} of emotion in about 1/2 hour.

After a lonnngg night of talking with my girls....they went to bed. As I sat on the edge of my bed...all I could think of was when I was a little girl...I use to cut ALL my dolls hair.

but, I had an {excuse} my dad was a barber!

This was the NOT the night to mention this to my girls....somehow in a {wierd} way I could fully understand why they did it but right now I can't let them know that~

Oh honey. I feel for you. The problem with these kinds of dolls and toys, etc. is that we want them preserved for posterity + grands and our kids just want to play with them! But you do know that you can send the dolls to the American Girl hospital. Here is the link:

Enjoy the creativity and spontaneity of your darling daughters ;-) xoxo

I so know ow your daughter's feel. I must say the hair is a bit unmanageable. You were brave though and stayed strong. I have a MyTwinn sitting in my room begging for it's hair to be cut and I just dont have the gut's to do it, and I am a cosmetologist so it is not like I can't do it, when I look at the hair it is screaming cut me it is a messed up rat's nest. I hope the hair isn't to bad and just think it is probably easier to manage now.

We never cut our dolls' hair. Guess I just always took care of my things and didn't want to ruin them.

I don't see what the big deal is though. They are dolls that are meant to be played with, right? I really don't know since I'm not a doll type person.

Eep!

If I'm remembering correctly, my sister used to like cutting my dolls' hair but I was happy to leave them untouched. I can understand the thrill of cutting the hair...

I did the same thing.
My Dad was not a barber...but I grew up to be a comsotologist!!! irony.

I think we all did that! But it's hard to shell out all that money for these pretty little dolls and then have your kids turn them out like the butcher had a go at them.

One particular memory for me as a child was a baby doll I had that I did a "trim" on! My mom was so angry (I probably did that before) that she cut off ALL her hair! Then she felt awful for reacting in such anger. She kept promising me that she'd buy her a "doll wig"; and I didn't know such a thing didn't exist.

PS -- It did not stop my cutting tendencies!!

I cut mine too-and never straight-I would cut, and cut and cut trying to straighten my mess-and end up crying...
I thought the picture was of one of your daughters at first-and I let out an "OH NO!" I am so glad it wasn't one of the girls' pretty hair!

I'm breathing a sigh of relief - just glad it wasn't your girls real hair! Both have such beautiful hair - you did a great job of making us wonder with that picture! ;-)

Have a great day...

I remember trying to stay calm when my youngest son told me he cut his bangs "so he would look cool." He didn't, by the way.

But I also remember sitting in my friend's room cutting her Chrissy doll's hair so that she would look cute. She didn't.

What goes around comes around, I guess.

Yep....thats a girl for you. My daughter cut Kirsten's hair a few years ago. The worst part being that it was her sisters doll. She didn't want to cut her own dolls hair. It passes too quickly. Enjoy them!

Oh, no! Of course it could always be worse! They could have cut their own hair! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! It's great to be back!

Since we just got our 2 daughters their first American Girl dolls for Christmas (one of them being Kit, incidentally!), I understand that you were upset! Maybe the doll hospital there could help? It's worth a call to find out at least! On the other hand, I guess you could say that the dolls are just being "loved", kind of like the Velveteen Rabbit :)! And isn't that why we bought them for our kids in the first place?! LOL!!! Good luck & let us know how it turns out! :)
Blessings,
Stacey

Oh my gosh...and I know those dolls aren't cheap either!! Thank goodness though, that it was the doll and not an experiment on each others' hair!!!

Oh no -- I would be upset too -- those beautiful dolls! When I saw the title, I thought your girls cut each other's hair!

OH WOW.... I think I would have reacted the same way!

Most kids have an episode or two with the scissors. I guess the bright side of things is that they did it to their dolls and not to themselves:)

Happy New Year! This was my first chance to get over here since the holidays. Hope this year brings you much happiness!

Lisa

You can order new doll heads only or just send them out for repair of the hair. Of course that will cost you.

OH my heart is aching for you! At least the girls felt confident enough is their artistic abilities to just go for it. Maybe? I'm trying here! ;-)

I would just leave them with their hair cuts! :) I know some day you will giggle over this episode with the doll hair, and if you fix it, there goes your story! Kids do stuff like this to their stuff, like an earlier poster said, they don't see it as collectable. Its just their doll that they are making more beautiful with a little hair trim. One thing to remember is that ownership of things is important for kids. If they destroy it, they have to live with it, or buy themselves new ones. Its a learning experience for them. Now if they did that to something of yours, that would be entirely different. Other people's property should be off limits. I do empathize, I have found nice toys completely destroyed by being left outside, ect. My response is always, "well, I won't be buying you anymore of those, you'll have to buy the next one yourself." It works like wonders. I think fixing it would send the wrong message about care for things. They should probabally have to live with the butchered hair on their dolls. I have to say, on a lighter note, my gosh that hair looks real, I can see the temptation.

i once cut my Skipper doll's hair... it was uneven so i had to do a little more. then again... oh i was devastated. other than that there has only been one haircutting episode with my kids. my daughter cut some of hers to use in a picture she was making (got the idea from a preschool story book... the girls grandfather was blind and she wanted a picture he could see/feel) it was quite relevant with her own eye problems and i could hardly be mad... at least she did it very inconspicuously. i would be kinda mad at the american girl doll hair cut though. i'm sure i would have yelled. and made her earn the money to replace the head. but if she likes the short hair? at least she didn't take to her own curls!
