Saying Goodbye...

Today, my son had to say "goodbye" to one of his best~est friends who is moving FAR away. He has known him since 2nd grade and there was an instant connection. As the years have passed and even a switch to different schools- they have remained bosom buddies.

Even when schedules got crazy and homework piled up and spending time together was limited- they would get back together just as if they saw each other every day...they never seemed to miss a beat.

As boys get older, competition grows stronger...who is the "best"..who is the "strongest"...who can hold their "breath" the longest but not much with these two. They didn't have to compete or prove anything- their friendship didn't call for it. They just enjoyed each other's company. It's funny- they were always "busy" doing boy things and I never caught them talking much. But, they did.

As we quickly said goodbyes (the second time!), I closed the door and saw tears streaming down my son's face. I asked if he wanted to go back out and give him a hug. He said "Mom, boys don't hug but he knows I will miss him". It's the hardest thing to see your son so sad and upset. Of course, I started crying, too. I wanted to take the pain away but I know I can't. It's all part of life and it has many {goodbyes} that come in different packages.

I hope my son will cherish his memories with his friend and search for those qualities in new friends he makes along the way.

They will be missed!

That is hard to say good-bye to a close friend, but nowadays with Facebook and email, it's easy to stay in touch. I know, it's not the same as actually doing things together. I feel sad for your son.

That's not cool...you brought a tear to my eye too. I loved his response about "Boys don't hug, but he knows I'll miss him." That is the true mark of a good friend.

Thanks for sharing the not so sunny days :)

Friendships like that are so very rare... I'm sorry your son had to say goodbye but hopefully it will turn out to be more of a "see you later"....
